Sustainable development in the global public discourse is often exemplified in terms of environmental, economic and social dimensions. To attain the goals of sustainable development an integrated approach is required consisting of ESG framework, corporate governance, and sustainable reporting. Concerns over climate change, clean air and water, renewable energy and land use continue to draw attention to sustainability, particularly sustainable urban planning. Sustainable development requires disruptive changes in the way our societies and businesses are organized. Hence, there is a need of circular economy in society which aims to redefine growth, focusing on positive society-wide benefits as it is based on the principles of design out waste and pollution, keep products and materials in use and regenerate natural systems. The effects can be seen on the global tourism and hospitality. The focus of the economies must be on the policies which should encourage entrepreneurial ecosystem for innovation in development of environmental management system.
A large number of developing coastal and island nations depend on tourism and fisheries for a significant part of their gross domestic product and public revenues. Thus, the concept of blue economy is coined and need for policies for sustainable development are purposed as the potential to grow the blue economy is limited by a series of challenges. The challenges can be overcome by educating the people about sustainable development. As higher education institutions (HEIs) have a fundamental role in transforming societies aimed at a more sustainable future. This can be done through creation and dissemination of knowledge, research, education and outreach, institutions of higher education lead the path towards sustainable development.
