Government Primary School (GPS) Nawabgarh, Mewat, Haryana
On 25th October 2024, a group of undergraduate BBA and B.Com students visited Government Primary School (GPS) Nawabgarh, Mewat, Haryana as part of a community outreach initiative. The visit to the government school was valuable experience that offered valuable insights into the educational environment of rural schools and the ways in which students and educators are working to make the most of limited resources. The primary objectives of the visit were to gain a better understanding of the conditions and teaching methods in rural schools, engage with students to assess their educational and developmental needs, and foster an environment of motivation and encouragement. In particular, we wanted to see how students responded to interactive learning activities and explore areas where additional support might be most effective. During our visit, we also discussed the possibility of conducting training sessions for teachers focused on leadership skills and emotional intelligence. Such training would equip teachers with tools to better manage classroom dynamics, foster a positive learning environment, and support students’ emotional and social development effectively.
During their visit, the undergraduate students distributed stationery items such as notebooks, pencils, and erasers to the primary school children. This act of generosity was met with gratitude from the students and staff of the school, as it helped provide necessary learning tools to children from underprivileged backgrounds. We had also organized a series of activities that aimed to boost students’ interest in academics and create an atmosphere of fun and learning. We began with interactive learning sessions, focusing on basic literacy and numeracy, which allowed us to connect with students and better understand their skill levels. These sessions included reading and math exercises, which the students seemed to enjoy as it broke away from their usual routines and engaged them in new, exciting ways. We also conducted drawing and coloring activities, which were met with enthusiasm and highlighted the students’ creativity and individual personalities. The initiative aligns closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education. SDG 4 aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. By providing essential learning materials and engaging children in interactive games, the undergraduate students contributed to the enhancement of educational experiences for primary school children, fostering an environment that encourages learning and development.
The outcomes of the visit were very encouraging. We found that the students were eager to learn and responded positively to interactive and engaging activities, demonstrating that a little motivation and encouragement could significantly enhance their interest in academics. The art activities were particularly impactful, as they helped students build confidence, showcase their creativity, and fostered a sense of teamwork and cooperation. However, the visit also revealed significant resource gaps. Many students lacked basic learning materials, and the school infrastructure could benefit from improvements in both classrooms and recreational areas. Conversations with teachers and parents emphasized the importance of community support in maintaining school attendance and supporting students’ education.
The undergraduate students' visit to GPS Nawabgarh in Mewat was both a rewarding and enlightening experience. It underscored the need for ongoing support and resource provision in rural schools to help bridge the educational gap for children in underserved communities. Moving forward, we recommend exploring sustainable support programs, including teachers’ training, resource donations and mentorship initiatives, to help ensure that the students and staff at GPS Nawabgarh continue to receive the encouragement and support they need to thrive academically and personally. The visit demonstrated the power of community engagement in fostering positive educational outcomes and reinforced the students' roles as active contributors to societal development. The event was planned and executed by Dr. Nusrat Khan, Professor, School of Management and Dr. Prabha Arya, Assistant Professor, School of Management also participated in this event.
