Workshop Against Domestic Violence An Awareness Initiative For Female Support Staff Regarding The Domestic Violence Act 2005

Location: Moot Court Hall, GD Goenka University, Gurugram.

To promote awareness and empower female support staff, GD Goenka University organized a Workshop Against Domestic Violence on 2nd December 2024. The initiative aimed to educate participants about their rights under the Domestic Violence Act, 2005, and to provide them with tools and resources to address and combat domestic abuse effectively.

The workshop, held in the Moot Court Hall Block- A, commenced at 12:00 PM and saw active participation from the female supporting staff across various departments. The program featured a blend of informative sessions and interactive activities designed to engage attendees and ensure they left with a clear understanding of the subject matter. Total 28 participants were present in the workshop.

Objectives of the Workshop

  1. To create awareness about the Domestic Violence Act, 2005, including its provisions and how to seek legal redress.
  2. To encourage women to recognize domestic abuse in all its forms—physical, emotional, financial, and verbal.
  3. To build confidence among the participants to stand up for their rights and seek support when needed.
  4. To provide information about support systems, including helplines, shelters, and legal aid services available to victims of domestic violence.

 

Key Highlights of the Workshop

1. Welcome Address

The event began with a welcome address by Prof. (Dr.) Deepti Wadera, Chair, ICC, who emphasized the importance of safeguarding the rights of women and fostering a safe and supportive community.

2. Expert Session on Domestic Violence Act, 2005

A legal experts & a certified POSH Trainers Dr. Deevanshu Shrivastava and Dr. Apoorva Dixit delivered an insightful session detailing the Act, explaining its purpose, scope, and key provisions. The participants were informed about the definition of domestic violence, protection orders, and the role of protection officers.

3. Interactive Q&A Session

The attendees were encouraged to share their experiences, ask questions, and clarify doubts. The legal expert addressed concerns related to confidentiality, legal processes, and practical steps to take in case of abuse.

4. Closing Remarks

The session concluded with vote of thanks by Prof.Deepti Wadera Chair Internal Complaints Committee and Prof. Jyoti Shrivastava, Co-Chair Internal complaints committee.

Outcome and Feedback:

The workshop received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the participants, who expressed gratitude for the initiative. Many attendees noted that the information shared was enlightening and would help them address personal or observed cases of domestic violence more confidently.

Conclusion:

The Workshop Against Domestic Violence proved to be a significant step towards empowering women through education and awareness. By equipping female support staff with knowledge of their rights and access to resources, GD Goenka University has taken a meaningful stride in supporting its community and fostering a culture of respect and safety.

The university plans to hold follow-up sessions and extend similar workshops in future.
