Introduction:
Prof Prakash Moorthy did post graduation in Art (M A) at the M.S University of Baroda (1985) and in Animation film Design (M Des) at the National Institute of Design (1989). In 1997 he was invited to show his films at the Hiroshima International Animation Film Festival. He is visiting faculty at the National Institute of Design, Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute Kolkata, MSU Baroda, IIT Hyderabad, Srishti Institute of Art Design and Technology Bangalore and Adjunct Prof at UID.
Prof Prakash Moorthy did Production Design of “Raison de Coeur”, a Swiss feature film directed by Markus Imhoof in 1996-97. In 1999 he did Production Design of “Vanaprastham”, feature film directed by Shaji N Karun, for which he won the Best Art Direction Award at Dubai International Film Festival.
He designed wild life interpretation centers at Rajamalai and Munnar wild life sanctuaries in 2005. His book “Animating an Indian Story” was published by NID in 2006 and he contributed short stories to “Between the earth and the sky” an anthology of stories from the forests edited by Savya Saachi for Penguin books, published in 2006. His writings on Design and Graphic Narratives have appeared in ‘Platform’ and ‘The India Quarterly’.
In 2006 he joined Miditech New Delhi as Head of Animation for the Sesame Street Workshop project in India: “Gali Gali Sim Sim”, a TV programme devoted to pre school education. In 2009 he created, designed and directed “Sulochana and the Nature Detectives”, a pilot film for Snaptoons, Turner Films International, which premiered on Cartoon Network. He is the recipient of the Padmasree Ram Mohan Award for Excellence in Animation Cinema.
Prakash Moorthy was Professor and Head of the Department of Animation Cinema at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), Kolkata, setting up the Department. Besides designing the curriculum for the same, he initiated the Animation Film Appreciation program “sense animation” that travels the North Eastern states of the country. He worked at National Institute of Design Ahmedabad as Visiting Faculty since 2000 and as Faculty at Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Trivandrum and Bangalore. Presently he is Adjunct Professor at UID, Gandhinagar and New Delhi, India.
