Two Days Online International Symposium ‘ENERGY CONSERVATION AND SOLAR ENERGY’

To combat the current pandemic situation without halting the teaching and learning process, GD Goenka University has shifted to online learning process and in continuation of the same, GD Goenka University has enthusiastically organized 2 week e-orientation program from 21st September to 1st October, 2020 to welcome the new batch of students. The whole orientation program is divided into various sessions and activities to make students aware about the university and its functioning. Right from the teaching-learning curricular to co curricular activities and many more, the students are meant to be oriented before the beginning of their college life. For the same, the university in general and the schools in particular of GD Goenka University have organised various sessions in two weeks. The School of Basic & Applied Sciences under the guidance of the Dean Prof.(Dr.) Ram Krishna Thakur alongwith the event incharges Ms. Ruby Kumari and Ms. Priya Sharma and all the faculty members and staff of the school has successfully conducted the first week (from 21st September, 2020 to 25th September 2020) sessions which included the following events:-

Day 1, 21 September,2020

The second week of orientation is scheduled from 28th September 2020 to 1st October, 2020.
Glimpses of Day wise Events:-

Day 1

School of Basic & Applied Sciences has warmly welcomed the new students with the address of Dean Prof.(Dr.) R.K Thakur. Dr. Thakur introduced students with the faculty members of SOBAS and explained the teaching and learning practices in SOBAS. He also enlightened them with his motivational talk and importance of science and technology. The session was further proceeded by the introduction of credit system and course planning for different courses

The students went through the process of online registration and document verification which was later followed by the interaction of student council members, registration to various clubs, allocation of mentors to the students and introduction to talent hunt competition.

At the end of the 1st day of orientation, students and parents were introduced with the leadership team of GDGU which was headed by the President, Prof.(Dr.) Suku Bhaskaran and the queries of students/parents were addressed at the end of session.

Day 2

On the second day of e orientation, students were introduced to the GDGU Leadership team which is headed by the President of GD Goenka University, Prof.(Dr.) Sukubhaskaran. Te following leadership team interacted with students and made them aware various aspects of university norms:-

Day 3

The day 3 session started with the talk of guest speaker Dr. Praveen Kumar, Senior Manager at WRI India. Dr. Kumar presented a talk on ‘Integrating Electric Vehicle, Renewable Energy and Batteries: Opportunities and Challenges’. Dr. Parveen emphasized on reducing the emission of pollutants to clean the air in urban areas which requires clean technology and clean energy. He discussed the same could be done using EV which our government is also focusing on. Dr. Kumar also explained the basic concept involved in Electric Vehicles and the challenges associated with it. He further discussed about the Lithium ion batteries which are preferred over lead acid batteries due to the low cost and compact size. But also discussed about its toxicity as a major concern. Some of the challenges which he discussed about the EVs are weight of batteries, temperature, Intelligent management etc. Finally, he emphasized that we should focus on shifting the Linear economy to circular economy by adopting recycling of batteries.

After the guest lecture, the students were taken to the virtual tour of various industries and labs like National Physical labs, CSIR labs, forensic Labs, Chemical industries etc. and the students got to understand how industries and labs work in different areas. Dr. Shashank Kamble explained the concepts of various labs/industries etc.

Then students went to verify their pending documents by the registration team and finally the session concluded with the talent hunt session taken by Ms. Jagriti and Ms. Mala along with student council members. The new students showcased their talents over there.

Day 4

The fourth day of E-orientation Programme commenced with the Mentorship session conducted by Dr. Anindita Roy Chaudhary and Dr. Parveen Kumar. In this session, the students learned about mentoring principles and their importance. The session acquainted students with the role of mentors in their academics and overall development. Dr. Anindita introduced the students to their respective mentors. The mentors interacted with their mentees and asked them submit their mentorship forms. Then the next session on “Introduction to Modelling and Simulation” was conducted by Dr. Sunita Negi. Dr. Negi provided deep insights into application of modelling and simulation in teaching-learning process.

Next Session was a Panel Discussion on Career Opportunities in various fields of basic and applied sciences. Dr. Amit Rajput and Dr. Deepika Garg moderated the panel discussion. The panellists were Dr. Swet Chandan (Founder and CEO First Vidya Educational Service Pvt. Ltd.), Dr. Rakesh Kumar Meena (Assistant Professor, Mathematics, BHU) and Dr. Akhilesh Kumar (Ph.D. IIT Kanpur). Dr. Amit Rajput initiated the discussion by giving an overview of the various career paths in basic and applied sciences. The new students asked the panellists about future scope of their chosen programmes like Data Science, Microbiology, Mathematics and so on. The panellists resolved the doubts of students and the session ended with the concluding remarks by the moderator. Prof. Dr. R.K. Thakur (Dean, SoBAS) also joined the session and thanked the invited panellists. After this session, the students completed the pending registration and document verification process.

The day comes to an end with the “Ice Breaking session” conducted by Dr. Sonika Sethi and Dr. Neeharika Srivastava. The students really enjoyed the session as they got to know each other and talked about their hobbies

Day 5

The day 5 of the e orientation commenced with a talk on Interdisciplinary learning at GDGU by Dr. Rohit Dutt & Dr. Tanuja Kaushik. The students were introduced to the importance of inter discipline learning in today’s scenario and how such practice is being followed in GDGU. The students were also motivated to think innovative and come up with new ideas and oppurtunities. This session was followed by the academic writing, referencing and plagiarism by Dr. Anjali Midha & Dr. B. Rajeshwari. This session made students aware of the ethics of academic writing in their career. In continuation with the session Dr. Swadesh Sharma familiarised students with the library and Information resource centre at GDGU. The students got to know how the library functions in our university, both offline in the university campus and also the online resources of information of our university. After this session, Major Karttikeya Sharma showed how the GDGU campus is continuously sanitised and safe and he also presented the drone look of the whole part of university so those students get to know about the university campus. In the last session, students showcased their talents through pre recorded videos and live talents.
