The inaugurating session of the career counseling webinar series was delivered by Prof. R.K.Thakur, Dean, School of Basic & Applied Sciences, GD Goenka University on July 13, 2020. The session was moderated by Dr. Shashikant Gupta (Faculty-In-Charge, Department of Physics). The session was welcomed by Dr. Gupta wherein he thanked the organizers of the series for starting with such a useful and student centric webinar series in the testing times of Covid-19. Dr. Gupta later handed over the stage to the speaker, Prof.R.K.Thakur after a brief introduction of his credentials.
Prof. R.K.Thakur started the session by highlighting the importance of science education from the history of human civilization to modern era. He emphasized on the most influential discoveries in the disciplines of Physical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Forensic Sciences and Environmental Sciences. Prof. Thakur also threw light on the significant contribution of these discoveries towards the current scientific progress and societal issues. In the final segment of the session, the speaker discussed about the pillars of the education system and its purpose in nurturing creative & imaginative minds..

After the talk, Dr. Gupta opened the forum for questions from the participants. The students asked several important questions on the career aspects in science education which were answered by the speaker. Finally, Dr. Gupta thanked the speaker Prof.R.K.Thakur for his enlightening and highly informative talk and also the participants who attended the session with enthusiasm. The session was attended by over 100 participants.

Session 2: The Fascinating Career in Biological Sciences

This interesting session on the ‘The Fascinating Career in Biological Sciences’ was conducted by Dr. Shashank Kamble & Dr. Raunak Dhanker. In the beginning of the session, Prof. R.K.Thakur highlighted the significant contribution of various disciplines of biological sciences in crucial scientific discoveries that benefited the mankind. The session was conducted in two parts. In the first part, Dr. Shashank Kamble discussed the intriguing world of biological sciences and its various branches such as microbiology, biochemistry, biotechnology, genetics, immunology etc. He emphasized on specialized disciplines of Microbiology & Biochemistry, various branches of it and career scopes at graduate, post-graduate and doctorate levels. Dr. Raunak Dhanker focused on the blooming field of biotechnology, its various aspects and the career options that one can choose. She also discussed the enriching teaching & learning experience that a student can get in the Department of Biological Sciences and in turn, in the School of Basic & Applied Sciences. Finally, both the speakers gave a detailed overview on various career options in each of these disciplines and in general, biological sciences. They highlighted the role of biological science in solving the mysteries of today’s world.

After the session, Prof. Thakur opened the forum for questions. The students actively participated in this brainstorming discussion by asking several questions such as the career scopes of blue biotechnology as well as astromicrobiology. Both the speakers tried to solve the queries to the best of their abilities and also shared their email IDs for further discussion. Finally, Prof. Thakur gave concluding remarks by thanking both the speakers & all the attendees of the session. The session was attended by over 90 participants.

Session 3: Lucrative Career Prospects in Nanotechnology

The third session of the career counseling webinar series was delivered on 17 July 2020, by Dr. Sunita Negi and Dr. Soumita Talukdar on the topic ‘Lucrative Career Prospects in Nanotechnology’. The session was moderated by Prof. R.K.Thakur, Dean, SoBAS who briefed the participants about the advances in the nanotechnology field and their un paralleled contribution to various scientific disciplines. Prof. Thakur then introduced the speakers for the session and handed over the stage to them. The speakers gave brief overview of the general terms and definitions related to nanotechnology. Then they introduced the audience to the basic building blocks of nanotechnology such as Graphene and Buckyball and also explained how folding of Graphene sheet gives rise to carbon nanotubes. Finally, speakers went on to discuss different types of carbon nanotubes & their properties. In the second part of the session, the speakers discussed about various career opportunities in the field of nanotechnology at graduate, post graduate & doctorate levels. The main focus of the session was to discuss the different applications of nanotechnology and related career prospects. The session was attended by over 90 participants.

After the talk, Prof. R.K. Thakur opened the session for questions from the participants. Several questions were asked on the fundamental & application oriented aspects of nanotechnology such as limitations of nanoparticles and the associated devices and the cytotoxicity associated with carbon nanotubes. The speakers tried to answer all the questions to the best of their possibility within the stipulated time frame. The session ended with a vote of thanks from Prof. Thakur for the speakers and the participants.

Session 4: Research & Development: A Remarkable Career

The fourth session of the career counselling webinar series was conducted on the theme, ‘Research & Development: A Remarkable Career’. Dr. Anindita Roy Chowdhury, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics was the speaker of the session. The moderator of the session and Dean of the School, Prof. (Dr.) R. K. Thakur, welcomed the audience. Prof. (Dr.) R. K. Thakur gave his introductory remark and called research as the most exciting aspect of higher education, research. Moreover, the Dean emphasized that research supports deeper learning and development of transferable knowledge and skills in different subject areas. Prof. (Dr.) R. K. Thakur mentioned that the session would give a deep insight into the domain of research and development as a career in applied sciences & technology.

The objective of the session was to introduce the most fascinating feature of higher education i.e. research. Curiosity is the first step to go ahead in the path of research and development. The speaker highlighted the basic skills to be nurtured to move ahead in this chosen career field and talked about the research oriented approach and associated methodologies required to solve a research problem. Further, the different opportunities that can be pursued in this field were highlighted in various domains. She mentioned about the various research institutes of India and the roadmap to pursue a career in research and development. Dr. Anindita emphasized on the importance of inclusion of research in various forms in the higher education curriculum and also stated that through research and development, one can serve for the betterment of society at large.

There were about 80 participants in the session and participating students appreciated the exposure to this domain of higher education. The participants also asked several questions on the career prospects in research & development. Prof. (Dr.) R. K. Thakur thanked the speaker for a nice and wonderful session. He concluded the session by stating thatresearch is a tool for developing knowledge and facilitating learning; research and development is also considered to support truth and act as an aid to business success.

Session 5: Forensic Expert: An Emerging and Flourishing Future

This 5th session of Career Counselling was about ‘Forensic Expert: An Emerging and Flourishing Future’ conducted on 22 July, 2020. The session started with an address from Prof. R.K. Thakur, Dean, SOBAS mentioning the importance of science education in nurturing creativity. He mentioned about some of the most complicated criminal cases that were solved primarily based on forensic evidences. Later on, Prof. Thakur introduced the speakers of the session, Dr. Neeharika Shrivastava & Ms.Ruby Kumari from the department of forensic sciences. The session was divided into two segments. In the first segment, Dr. Neeharika Srivastava introduced the students to different forensic courses like Forensic biology, Forensic chemistry, Fingerprinting, Document examination, Ballistics etc. She emphasized the importance of forensic sciences in reveal the hidden clues that are essential in solving crime cases. Dr. Neeharika also emphasised on how a degree in forensic science can lead to a successful career. In the second segment, Ms. Ruby Kumari focused on various government, semi government and private sector’s career opportunities in Forensic Science.Students were informed about different prospects and expected salaries after opting Forensic sciences.

More than 90 students actively participated in the session and found it highly informative and interesting. The participants also asked several queries to the speakers and were keen to know the latest job options in the field. The session made them understand need of Forensic science not only in criminal but in civil cases as well. At the end, Dean, Prof. R.K. Thakur concluded the session thanking the speakers, students and all attendees for their enthusiastic participation.

Session 6: Mathematical Sciences: A Promising Career

The sixth session in the career counseling webinar series on ‘Mathematical Science: A promising career’ was delivered by Dr. Renu Chaudhary on July 25, 2020. The session started with the address of Dean, SOBAS, Prof. (Dr.) Ram-Krishna Thakur mentioning the importance of mathematics and its relation to other subjects. Dr. Renu Chaudhary, the speaker of the session discussed the significant discoveries in mathematics such as the discovery of zero, Pythagoras theorem, and the invention of calculus that changed the world. She highlighted the use of mathematics in daily life such as in electronic gadgets, waiting for line, the vehicle one drive, medical images, etc. She also emphasized the Fibonacci sequence, Fibonacci spiral, and golden ratio that one can see in flowers, leaves, and butterflies etc. and also about how mathematics is helping the society in combating COVID 19. Dr. Renu then discussed various courses offered by SoBAS at graduate & post graduate levels and various career opportunities after having a degree in mathematics. The career options includes research positions in institutions and universities; teaching jobs in universities; companies providing financial services & solution. The salaries offered are better than those offered to IT graduates. Students trained in pure mathematics are also actively recruited by these industries since almost all branches of mathematics are useful to them.

Approximately 75 participants attended the session. The participating students were actively engaged in the session and asked queries about future job prospects after studying mathematics. The session ended with a vote of thanks from Prof. Thakur to the speaker, Dr. Chaudhary; the organizing committee of the webinar series and the participating faculty members & students.

Session 7: Career Opportunities in Chemical Sciences

The session, conducted on 27th July, was started by the moderator, Dr R. K Thakur, Dean, SoBAs. He emphasized that chemistry is a part of our everyday lives which helps to develop subject-specific skills valued by all employers and thus opens doors to a wide range of careers, most of which aim to solve global challenges. It is a very versatile field and can help one get into any industrial, educational, scientific or government field. School of Basic and Applied Sciences, G.D. Goenka University provides opportunities to get the B.Sc.(H), M.Sc., Ph.D. degree in Chemistry. Students and staff are carrying out research in an atmosphere of support and encouragement in various important fields of Chemistry. The Speaker, Dr.Sonika Sethi, started with a brief introduction about importance of Chemistry, and branches of chemistry. She then described about career opportunities, job profiles and recruiting sectors in the field of chemistry. Dr. Sonika discussed about courses offered, various facilities, brief introduction of faculties and the best practices carried out at the school. The session was attended by around 80 participants and there were some questions asked by the participants, which were answered by Dr. Sonika Sethi. The session ended with vote of thanks by Prof Dr. Thakur and he emphasized on importance of taking up science not only as a profession, but also for societal benefit. The speaker received a positive feedback from most of the particpants.

Session 8: Physics and Astronomy: Career Prospects

The 8th session in the career counseling webinar series was delivered by Dr. Shashikant Gupta, Associate Professor (Physics), School of Basic & Applied Sciences, GD Goenka University. The session was moderated by Prof. R K Thakur (Dean SoBAS). In the begning, Prof. Thakur gave a brief introduction to the webinar series and then he gave a brief overview about astronomy & its importance in day to day life. Following the introductory remarks, Prof. Thakur introduced the speaker of the session, Dr. Gupta.

Dr. Shashikant Gupta started the webinar with an introduction to the subject of Astronomy and what different skills are required for astronomers. He also highlighted about what is the path that leads to a career in Astronomy and what types of job opportunities are available. Dr. Gupta mentioned that Astrophysics is a branch of space science that applies the laws of physics and chemistry to explain the birth, life and death of stars, planets, galaxies, nebulae and other objects in the universe. He also emphasized that the vast field of astronomy and astrophysics helps one to keep in touch with advanced scientific concepts and at the same time, to get involved in some of the most ambitious projects in the history of mankind.

More than 80 participants attended the webinar and many participants asked questions after the session. One participant wanted to know about the possibility of joining space program at NASA or ISRO. There were some common queries about the carrer prospective in physics. Dr. Thakur, Dr. Gupta and Dr. Anindita Roy Chowdhury answered the queries of the participants. The session was ended with concluding remarks from Prof. RK Thakur. Prof. Thakur also thanked the organizers, speaker, and the participants for making the session highly successful.

Session 9: Geology & Environmental Science: Opportunities for Sustainable Future

The final session on of the ‘Science Education: Career Prospects‘, a webinar series on career counseling was delivered by Dr. Praveen Kumar on 01st August 2020 from 4:30-5:30 PM. The session involved participation of about 86 participants.

The session started with welcome of participants by Professor (Dr.) R. K. Thakur, Dean, SoBAS. He talked about various aspects of science education and need in present time to motivate young minds. He introduced and invited the speaker of session 9 (Geology & Environmental Science: Opportunities & Future Prospects), Dr. Parveen Kumar (Assistant Professor, Geology & Environmental Science), School of Basic & Applied Sciences to deliver the talk.

Dr. Kumar introduced participants with the science of geology and environment in an interesting and interactive way. He explained about various sub-domains of geology and environmental science where geologists and environment experts get specialized and work. He familiarized participants with the skills required, job responsibilities, and professional life of a geologist and environment professional with interesting videos. He also discussed about eminent geologists and environmentalists and their significant contributions to motivate participants. The session’s major focus has been on explaining educational and job opportunities available, and salary package in geology and environment domains.

He mentioned about important institutions offering education in above areas and emphasized that GD Goenka University is one of the few institutions offering quality education in above areas from private sector. He introduced participants about UG (B.Sc. Pass – Geology/Physics/Chemistry or Geology/Physics/Math or Geology/Zoology/Botany), PG (M.Sc. in Environmental Science & Management, M.Sc. Forestry, & M.Sc. Wildlife, M.Sc. Geology), PG Diploma in Environment, Health, & Safety and PhD programs being offered in geology and environmental science at School of Basic & Applied Sciences, GD Goenka University. He further discussed about uniqueness of industry tailored course curricula and experiential learning field based activities as an integral component of teaching and learning at GDGU for desired skills and overall development of students in above domains.

he session increased curiosity among students and resulted in intense discussion afterwards. The students asked if they can have interaction with faculties at SoBAS regarding research and also about the scope of UG degree with Zoology in geology domain. Dr. Kumar answered the questions satisfactorily. Professor R.K. Thakur stated that faculties and GDGU are always open for research and academic collaboration for outside students. The session was concluded by Professor Thakur with enlightening words and acknowledgement of organizing team.
