The Department of Biological Sciences came into existence in 2019 and was started as Bachelor’s degree programme in Biochemistry and Microbiologyin 2017 and 2018 respectively, under the aegis of School of Engineering, GDGU. The department is now working under the School of Basic and Applied Sciences andcurrently encompassestwo disciplines of Biological Sciences viz.B.Sc. (H) Biochemistry andB.Sc. (H) Microbiology. The department has expanded and will be offering 4 new programmes viz. B.Sc. (H) Biotechnology and M.Sc. Biotechnology, M.Sc. Microbiology and M.Sc. Biochemistry from the academic year of 2019-20.The mission of this department is to equip the students with a solid foundation in the biological sciences, along with training them at the forefront of research.
All the three disciplines of the department viz. Biotechnology, Microbiology and Biochemistry are research-oriented fields of biology which give knowledge about the living systems, ranging from whole organisms up to molecular and atomic levels that could be eventually applied to improve the quality of life.
Biochemistry discipline deals with the chemical structure, functions and metabolic pathways of simple and complex biological molecules to understand various aspects of functioning at cellular and molecular levels, health and disease with applications in Biotechnology and Medicine.Microbiology is a broad discipline of science that includes the study of bacteria, algae, protozoa, fungi, and viruses in terms of their ecology, biochemistry, physiology, genetics, and role in disease processes. The knowledge about microorganisms is of particular interest due to industrial applications (food and dairy, beverages, fermentation products etc.) as well as research implications in biotechnology and genetic engineering.Biotechnologyis a modern cutting-edge technology based interdisciplinary branch of biological science which incorporates the principles of biological, physical and chemical sciences
Completion of the Bachelor and Master Degree programme in Biochemistry, Microbiology or Biotechnology would allow the student to go for more specialized and advanced study at the research level leading to the Doctoral degree in respective disciplines. In all the programmes, students are exposed to a breadth of knowledge as well as hands-on-training in current specific areasto prepare them for a promising career in biological sciences.
